New York Mills is host to one of Otter Tail County Solid Waste's canister sites for recycling. These bins are located at the City Utilities Building at 102 N. Boardman Ave, on the west edge of New York Mills. Items which can be dropped off at this site include glass (excluding light bulbs, automotive glass and porcelain), plastic with a neck or spout (ice cream pails, margarine and whipped topping containers and plastic bags are not accepted), aluminum, tin, newspaper/phone books (except for glossy paper, which needs to be taken to any recycling center such as the Perham site), corrugated cardboard and white or pastel paper/newsprint. Tag board, construction paper and fluorescent paper are not accepted.

For items which are not acceptable at the canister site, a Household Hazardous Waste Colletion date is scheduled every year. For 2017, the date for the New York Mills location is Friday, September 8th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the City Garage (102 N. Boardman). This collection is for households ONLY.
